As I opened the door and saw the empty tables I knew I was in for a treat. Kara and I stood at the entrance for a few minutes until someone sitting at the bar asked what I was looking for. I simply answered, “Food.” He said, “Ohh, ok. Have a seat somewhere.” We sat at a table and immediately realized how wobbly the table was so we went to a booth which happened to have a nice gash in the cushion on one side. Several minutes later a waitress came to us and asked for our drink orders: waters all around. They were served in clear plastic cups with minuté traces of ice. Kara and I perused (not quickly) the menu and eventually decided on chili cheese fries for an appetizer, Philly cheese steak for Kara, and grilled chicken club for me.

While we were waiting for the food I decided to check out the pool tables. Much to my dismay they were four dollars per person per hour. At $8/hour for the two of us, and given that the tables weren’t very nice, we lumbered back to our booth. There were several large screens with projectors mounted to the ceiling — none of which were in use — that could have made the atmosphere a bit more appealing.

Finally, after about 15 minutes, our chili cheese fries came. The portion was fairly large and the fries were doused with cheese, chili, and beans. After we finished the fries we waited for almost 30 minutes before our meals came. I saw the cook walk out and sit at the bar with his towel draped over his shoulder as he told the waitress our meals were done.

About two minutes into the main course Kara and I were out of water which was not replenished until our meals were almost gone. My grilled chicken sandwich was mostly bread with bits of bacon, tomato, lettuce, and an unintentionally charred breast of chicken. The onion rings were ok but slightly mushy. Kara enjoyed her Philly cheese steak and homemade potato chips and had enough left over for an entire meal.

The only reason we decided to try out this place was because Restaurant.com had recently added it to the local area’s listing. If the dingy and unprofessional atmosphere, combined with poor service, had been better this would have been a decent experience but I really wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending BG McGee’s to anyone.
