Force Windows to Manage Wireless Networks

August 21, 2007 – 11:30 am

Have you ever been frustrated with the wireless networking software that comes with your particular wireless card? Unfortunately both the vendor’s software and the Windows wireless network manager don’t work in harmony. You can either use one or the other but not both.

To force Windows to manage the wireless networks perform the following steps:

  1. Open “Wireless Network Connection” from the system tray.
Windows Wireless Network Connection - Cannot Configure this Wireless Connection
  2. Click “Change advanced settings” in the menu on the left under “Related Tasks”.
  3. Click on the “Wireless Networks” tab.
  4. You will see a screen similar to the following:
    Wireless Network Connection Properties
  5. Click the checkbox beside “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings”.
  6. Click OK

Windows will now manage your wireless connections!

  2. Don’t have a “Wireless Networks” tab? No problem.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.

    2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.

    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

    4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.

You should now have a “Wireless Networks” tab.
