Installing OpenVPN (Trying To)

August 16, 2007 – 12:42 am

Over the past two days I’ve spent hours trying to figure out how to configure my OpenVPN virtual appliance. These are the best resources I’ve found so far.

  1. TinyServers SSL/VPN
  2. Creating VPN users
  3. Redirect all traffic through the VPN

For some reason I can only get connected on UDP 1194 (the default). Any time I try to change it on the server and client, even if I update my firewall, the connection fails. Also, I can’t get the DNS to work when redirecting all traffic through the VPN. One of the sites suggested using the “iptables” command in Linux to NAT the traffic but the virtual appliance I’m using doesn’t have the iptables command installed. The entire virtual appliance is only 6MB so I can’t really blame it.

If you have experience getting OpenVPN installed and working with traffic redirection please let me know!
